Protecting the Places That Protect People
When people think about supporting charities, they often think about donations.
Money is vital, of course. It pays for services, resources and the people who deliver them. But there are other ways to make a difference too: giving time, sharing skills, and using what you know to support the organisations that strengthen our communities.
For more than 20 years, I have worked in the trade repairing and maintaining properties. During that time, I have seen how much difference a safe, welcoming and well-maintained space can make.
A building is never just a building.
It might be where a young person finds support, where a family receives advice, where someone attends a wellbeing group, or where a community comes together.
These spaces matter.
Yet across the UK, charities are facing increasing financial pressure. When budgets are stretched, essential maintenance is often one of the first things to be delayed. Small issues that seem manageable today can become bigger and more expensive problems over time.
A damaged wall, worn surface or neglected repair may not seem urgent, but for organisations already focused on delivering vital services, finding the time and money to address these issues can be difficult.
That is why I created the PRA Community Award.
Every quarter, PRA Plastering will donate up to 12 hours of skilled trade support to a Hertfordshire charity or community organisation where practical help can make a genuine difference.
The aim is simple: to help protect the spaces that support people every day.
This is not about creating something new. It is about looking after the places that already do so much good.
We are inviting local people, charities and community organisations across Rickmansworth, Watford, St Albans, Harrow and Hemel Hempstead to nominate groups that could benefit from practical maintenance support.
The organisations closest to their communities often know where help is needed most. Whether it is a community room that needs refreshing, repairs that have been delayed, or maintenance jobs that have become difficult to prioritise, we want to hear about them.
Because giving is not just about what we can provide financially. Sometimes, it is about sharing the skills we already have.
