Skimming & Re-skimming — Hertfordshire & North-West London
Smoothing over old or damaged plaster to restore walls and ceilings to a flawless finish.
Skimming applies a thin finishing coat of plaster — typically 2–3mm — over an existing base to create a perfectly smooth, paint-ready surface. It is one of the most frequently requested plastering services because almost any wall or ceiling can benefit: cracked older plaster, walls left bare after damp-proofing, new plasterboard waiting for a finish coat, or simply surfaces that have grown tired over the years.
Re-skimming is the same process applied to walls that already carry a skim coat but have developed hairline cracks, surface deterioration, or uneven patches. Rather than stripping back to brick, Roger assesses whether the existing base is sound and, if it is, applies a fresh coat directly over the top — saving time, mess, and cost.
The result in both cases is a surface that is ready to accept paint, wallpaper, or any other finish without telegraphing imperfections through the coating. Roger works across domestic and commercial properties throughout Hertfordshire and North-West London.
What to Expect
- Surface assessment and prep — checking for loose plaster, damp, or movement before work starts
- PVA bonding coat applied and allowed to tack off
- Skim coat applied in one or two passes depending on surface condition
- Ruled off and trowelled to a smooth finish
- Final polish once the plaster reaches the right moisture level
- Area left clean, dust-sheeted throughout
Common Questions
How long does a room take to skim?
A standard bedroom or living room takes one day. Larger or more complex rooms may need two. Roger will give you a time estimate when he quotes.
How long before I can paint?
Fresh plaster needs a minimum of 4 weeks to fully dry before applying emulsion. A mist coat (heavily diluted paint) after two weeks helps seal the surface.
Do I need to re-skim or can I just fill the cracks?
Hairline cracks can often be filled, but widespread cracking or uneven surfaces usually point to a base problem. Roger will advise honestly on the most cost-effective solution.
